I am a resident of california and I have a mortgage for a house in India. Can I deduct the interest of my Indian mortgage from taxes in US?

    Yes, if it’s your principal residence or a second residence, you deduct the interest on Schedule A. Do be sure you have proof that the home secures the loan, however. If the documents are not in English you may need a certified translation if you are audited.

    If this is a rental property, the mortgage interest, along with the rental income and all other expenses are claimed on Schedule E.
